One thing that this pandemic has made me realize that how small our lives are. We are always at the mercy of mother nature. There are several times when we face any problem and can't think properly our partner's helping hand saves the day.

Why Gay Community is plagued with Hookup Culture?

In 2018, Indian Supreme Court decriminalized 377act. It was a historical verdict for the LGBTQIA+ family. But did it change our lives? Are the grassroot level getting any benefit? How post decriminalization is different from the previous?

Let me start by saying it hasn't changed our attitude or mentality a bit. Our community is, was and probably always will be a place for free and unlimited sex, multiple sex partners,  no liability, no legal consequences. But why? 

The reason could be "Hookup Culture".  Hookup or simply 'easy sex' with or without money, is a concept that is widely adapted in the most developed to under developed countries. Although prostitution is considered as the oldest profession in the world, it seems we are no better than our straight counterparts. Online meet and quick sex to satisfy physical needs not only attracts gay but also straight people too. What we don't realize is that businesses are being set up using this mentality. Apps like blued ,planet romeo, grinder or even Facebook are promoting this purposely to hook up more people who feel mentally isolated just because of their sexual orientation. A huge population from our community spend their time online just to get attention from others. Nowadays meeting someone is only restricted to sex. No wonder people are often rude and abusive while talking to someone online. Thus relationship suffers from this and we tend to lose our faith in humanity. 

What can we do individually? 

Well Change should start from self. Until we are concerned about things that affects us personally we can't think of others on the opposite end.

Why Bollywood lacks Gay movies or TV series?

Bollywood, the biggest entertainment business in the world had an annual turnover of 13,800crore in 2019 and around 23,000crore in 2020. The money, fame everything that one can ask for still fails to understand the social issues. Result is quite evident "Dostana" a movie that portrays gays as a JOKE.

There is no TV series that features gays as normal human being and not a comedy element.

I understand the fact that we must not expect acceptance would be easy for anyone beyond the norm. A society full of prejudices always fail to understand or even recognize as human being so much so that taunting, teasing became a thing of complement for most of us. We happily accept being called as ladies, chhaka or hijra even when you don't consider yourself one.

Historical evidences indicate that entertainment is the only business that was ruled by the gay community. If so then why change? why gays are always neglected? or any producer or director casts a gay or trans as their main character?

Film or TV series are based on the social concept and if we don't include or feature it will always remain as TABOO. No laws can change the perception of society that is deeply rooted in our tradition. A sense of fear, neglect, ignorance or loss are some of the biggest concern for those associated with entertainment business. But if these people don't come forward and support us, discrimination will be there. Until people discuss and understand different aspects of our life they'll never understand the problems and struggle we go through on a day-to-day basis.

In this respect, the efforts made by a lot of directors and producers must be appreciated for their courage for making short movies. Mainstream movies like Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan must be encouraged and appreciated as people who work tirelessly to create such a masterpiece are not exempted from getting backlashed by the society. Doing something is much better than doing nothing.

Why protection should be the utmost priority during gay sex?

Sex is probably one of the most important basic human needs. It helps to strengthen the bond or fulfill simply the desire of getting pleasure. When it comes down to pleasure, we overlook a very significant part that is using protection. STDs or sexually transmitted diseases such as Syphilis, Gonorrhea, HIV are to name a few that can be transmitted by your partner. While most of us know about these disease a big chunk of population in gay community never even heard these names before.

Being a biologist and a gay, I want to add one more on this list of disease. Shigellosis, a disease that has potential to kill if left untreated and it's very infectious. Shigellosis is caused by a bacteria called Shigella sp. which releases a toxin shiga toxin. This toxin is also released by some other bacteria like E.coli. There is no vaccine available till now.

According to a study conducted in Uk, the frequency is more in men who are having unprotected sex with other men. The bacteria follows a anal-oral route. An infected person may suffer severe acute diarrhea and bloody stool.

I know there are a lot of tops who don't use condom or bottoms don't want to use protection. I request you to read this and take things very seriously. As you might have observed it doesn't take too much for a virus or bacteria to kill thousands of people. Please be aware and use protection while having sex.

Why gay relationship is unstable?

Relationship, the best thing if you have it and if you don't you are a wuss. Well this is what people think if you are a straight. But how does gay relationship works? And why don't we see more stabililty in gay relationship than the straight?

Let me start by saying that the problem is "US". But the question that follows with that is how? and why? To explain this we need to understand the social concept of our development. We don't choose what we believe and what not right from a very tender age. Right from our childhood everything that we do or don't, likes or dislikes are strongly influenced by our culture and tradition taught by our family members. 

So if one decides to come out of these finds himself or herself in a dilemma. It's almost universal "either me or family". Taking decision is nothing less than a Herculean task. People with strong mentality can go for the first and rest remorse till the death. Question is, what does that have to do with relationship? You can't have a relationship with one person. When we are in a relationship we tend influence the other person same way that we've been brought up. This is the spark that can potentially burn the bond built over a long time. The relationship bites into the dust and hatred is born. 

How do we get out of this situation? Well the easiest way is to accept each other as it is without even trying to change the other. A sense of respect not only for the person but also for his/her culture is the key to establish a meaningful relationship on the basis of understanding.
